Can you Qualify?

What kind of green project are you implementing at home? Do you know what kind of funding you are looking for? Many projects will fit into grant criteria easily (like solar panels, wind mills, etc). But smaller projects are often harder to classify. Things like home gardening and eco-friendly insulation may qualify for a generous green grant even though they are smaller projects. So don’t be discouraged if you are not shelling out thousands of dollars on your green home project, there is still grant money out there for you!

Research at Federal Level

Start at the highest level of government, research their website, and see what they offer. Most of the major money green grants come from these sources, so don’t be afraid to spend some time here. In the United States you will want to visit the EPA’s website, in Canada you will want to visit the Environment Canada website. A full list of government grant agencies is listed here. Also don’t be eager to subscribe to paid grant research services, most claim they have special access to secret grants that you should pay them money to disclose. This is never the case, governments issue grants because they need to give them out. Otherwise their funding could be cut in the next term. Check out some online federal grant resources, and remember that grants are issued to be found!

Research at the State Level

This is basically the same process as the federal level, except applied to your state or local government. Depending on your state, you may find some serious money for your project here. Places like California and Ontario have a large amount of money devoted to green initiatives.

Research Private Organizations

Many private organizations and foundations will offer grants and awards. A list of foundations can be found here. You will also want to research any local charities or organizations that fund green initiatives. Local organizations may be harder to find, but you could find people in your neighbourhood that are eager to lend a hand. Sometimes that can be more valuable than money.

Present Yourself Professionally

When applying for these grants you will need to present yourself professionally. Be sure to have a solid plan with real costs and timelines. Make sure all of your proposals are proof-read. Often little mistakes or grammatical errors can cost you funding. Be sure to return any correspondences promptly (emails, phone calls, etc). The grant agencies will want to see that you are taking this project seriously, otherwise they will not invest their money in you.

Follow these steps and find the money that is associated with your sustainable project. Look at all the different levels from federal to private. Treat your project like a business. Apply to as many grants as you can, even if you don’t fit the descriptions exactly! It does not hurt to apply and you might be surprised with the money you can find for your green project.
